Montpelier Square II

The property is a Victorian detached listed house located in Montpellier Square, one of London’s most prestigious residential addresses. The square is defined by its elegant architectural character and a central communal garden, shared by the surrounding properties.

Following the recent completion of a project within the same square, we were approached by a local estate agent to develop a scheme aimed at optimising the existing layout and enhancing the spatial potential of the house.

Design Concept

The property, like many others in the square, has been overdeveloped over time, resulting in the complete loss of the original spatial hierarchy and its relationship with the rear private garden. A series of incremental extensions constructed over the years significantly reduced natural light and ventilation, creating dark and compromised spaces at both ground and lower-ground levels.

Our proposal—building on the approach successfully implemented in a previous project within the same square—aims to reinstate the original garden level and remove the later overdeveloped extensions. This strategy restores a clear spatial hierarchy, re-establishes a meaningful connection with the rear garden, and substantially improves natural light and ventilation throughout the lower levels of the house.

As a result of the removal of a substantial amount of built area, we propose the introduction of an additional basement level accommodating a service room, utility room, and gym. This approach allows the upper floors—where access to natural light is more valuable—to remain as open and flexible living spaces.

In addition, a new floor level is introduced at roof level, while a glazed rear garden extension is proposed to bring natural light into the lower-ground floor, significantly improving daylight penetration and spatial quality.
