Garde II Listed Maisonette

Lyndhurst Gardens II is our second project on Lyndhurst Gardens in Hampstead, a beautiful sequence of Queen Anne Revival properties originally built as single houses and later converted into flats. The building is listed, and this apartment occupies the ground and lower-ground levels.
Heritage and landscape
The apartment was very poorly configured due to a series of badly designed interventions, leaving the spaces fragmented and erasing much of the original historical character. Our approach was to re-establish a connection with the building’s heritage by rebuilding the original spatial forms internally and introducing a contemporary extension at ground-floor level. This addition creates a renewed relationship with the rear garden, which already contained beautiful mature trees and planting.
We conceived the extension as a lightweight structure to minimise its visual impact against the listed building. It functions as a garden room, fully glazed towards the landscape, with an open, cantilevered corner that expands the internal space and visually dissolves the boundary between inside and outside.
