Semidetached Houses
Brief
We were approached by a landowner to prepare a feasibility study for the development of a plot in Hampstead, North London. The quality of the site is strongly defined by its surrounding mature trees and dense vegetation. Our proposal responds to this unique character by designing two semi-detached terraced houses that open fully towards the rear of the site, where the lush landscape provides natural privacy and offers beautiful views from every room.
Design
The streetscape has a predominantly historical character; however, due to the proximity of a listed modernist residence, the planning department supported an approach based on low-rise volumes with a strong horizontal emphasis. This strategy ensures that the new homes remain discreet within the streetscape and harmonise with the neighbouring listed building, designed by a close colleague of Marcel Breuer.
